My dad just recently retired, and he's generously giving me and my sister a decent chunk of change to use on our houses. I am DYING to get rid of the carpet in the living room. No one with 5 pets should ever, under any circumstances, have carpet. It's just gross. So here's my dilemma.
Wood or stained concrete?

If I get hard woods, I want this look (Brazilian Cherry):
So what do you think? I'm not sure about the dogs and hard woods, but I know a lot of people do it.

I really love hardwood but if you have dogs they will certainly scratch the wood. Although you could get laminate hardwood and it would not scratch (it looks identical to hardwood).
Lucky duck!
I LOVE the wood. It is so pretty.
I hear, though, that the staned concrete can be really neat too. Especially with dogs.
So, obviously, I am without opinion.
Wood.
concrete. everyone is doing wood. be different.
Go for the Wood! Its beautiful!
It will also be a huge bonus feature for selling and you never get sick of hardwood it is classic. Concrete might just be a trend wood has been around in homes forever!
Oooooh...tough choice. For some reason, I want to think that the concrete will be hard on your knees. I don't know why I think that. Plus, it seems like it would get really cold. Oh, wait...you (and I) live in Texas. Cold not an issue. ANYWHO, I guess I vote for wood. Plus, hearing the word "wood" makes me giggle. Wood. Ha!
Hmmm, that's a tough call.
Stained concrete is totally the thing right now. It is very cool.
I have all hardwoods and I love them...but they would get scratched.
It's hard to say without seeing them and seeing your house but I'm leaning toward concrete.
I love when people ask for advice on something I actually know about.
First of...very cool of your Dad.
Second...both are totally awesome and you'll love whatever you choose.
That said, my entire house (minus the bathrooms, which have tile) has hardwood floors. Painted hardwood floors. It looks awesome. But I just don't feel like it cleans up as nice as I would like it to. And I would never put wood in the kitchen again.
The house we are getting ready to build...concrete floors, baby. You can't hurt those bad boys. And don't even get me started on how cool they look.
I can't wait to hear what you decide and to see pictures.
My Husband's family is in the lumber business... so I'd go for the hardwood! But I do kind of like the concrete staining... but would it be good for re-sale?
How fun!
hard wood is what's in-classic! and yes Brazilian Cherry, it'll look great!
I wish i was home deciding what floor to get...:)
If you live in a place where it gets cold, would the concrete floor be cold? It seems like it's be colder than wood. Just a thought. They're both beautiful.
I can't decide. My friend has hardwood & says the dog & cat run & slide...she seems to think they enjoy it though.
I think wood. If you get concrete, what happens if it chips, is it going to be cold, will you slip when it gets wet, will the dogs loose their footing because they come in with damp feet, etc?
I think they can put a poly coat on hardwood to prevent dog nails...
Oh, crap (you would think this was MY house LOL) I say...go with wood!
Shelly
Wood. I loves me some wood.
If I were still living in Texas I would do stained concrete in a second. It's beautiful, durable and hell, if you decide a few years down the road you want a change there's no ripping anything up!
I love polished concrete. Is Brazilian cherry sustainable? How about bamboo instead? It's gorgeous and easily replenished. My vote is for concrete though.
We put pergo in and we really like it, and the dogs haven't hurt it. And that's pretty good with one that weighs over 100# :)
The stained concrete looks cool too.
Concrete is soooo cold on the feet. My vote is for bamboo too!
I loved stained concrete. I vote for it!
Stained concrete!!!! You can always add hardwood or pergo on top later on down the line, plus it's VERY modern.
